  35.     What is CHIEF'S INSTALLER PRO?
  36.     ------------------------------
  37.     Chief's Installer Pro for Windows is a generic program for installation
  38.     of Windows applications.
  39.  
  40.     Install is an "off-the-shelf" installation suite. The program will
  41.     copy files from floppy disks (or a directory on a hard disk) to the
  42.     destination directory. If the files are compressed with Microsoft's
  43.     COMPRESS.EXE they will be decompressed automatically. In this respect
  44.     Install uses the routines in LZEXPAND.DLL. If the files are not
  45.     compressed, they will simply be copied.

  48.     INSTALLATION
  49.     ------------
  50.     You can either;
  51.       [a] simply copy all the files into a directory,
  52.           or
  53.       [b] run INSTALL.EXE from Program Manager or File Manager
  54.           or
  55.       [c] run SETUP.EXE from Program Manager or File Manager

  58.     RESTRICTIONS/FEATURES
  59.     ---------------------
  60.     1. You can only install into any combination of the following;
  61.          (a) ONE destination directory, and up to 45 subdirectories
  62.              under it
  63.          (b) the Windows directory
  64.          (c) the Windows SYSTEM directory
  65.          (d) the TEMP directory
  66.     2. Only a maximum of 45 installation disks are supported. Install will
  67.        prompt for the disks as they are required.
  68.     3. Install will optionally offer to put the destination directory
  69.        into the "PATH" statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT
  70.     4. Install will optionally create a Program Manager group file, and
  71.        icons for any supplied file(s) - .EXEs, README files, etc.
  72.     5. Install will optionally run any supplied program(s) during the
  73.        installation, as part of the installation process.
  74.     6. Install will optionally run any supplied program(s) immediately after
  75.        the installation is complete
  76.     7. The stipulated format of the WINSTALL.INF file must be followed
  77.        strictly.
  78.     8. Install allows you to supply on-line for the installation.
  79.        You have to create a Windows help file called WINSTALL.HLP. This
  80.        help file can be accessed by clicking on the "HELP" button. A simple
  81.        one is supplied. You can either use that, or create your own.
  82.        If no WINSTALL.HLP file is found in the path, then the "HELP"
  83.        button is removed from the Install window.
  84.     9. Install will check whether there is sufficient space on the target
  85.        drive - based on information which you supply as to how much disk
  86.        space your application requires.
  87.        If you need extra temporary disk space for the installation, Install
  88.        can check for this also.
  89.    10. Install will make entries in any INI (or other) file(s) specified
  90.        by you. Up to 20 entries can be made. Do NOT use this feature to
  91.        insert an entry which may already exist - the old entry will be
  92.        deleted and replaced by the new one (e.g., do NOT use it for
  93.        "DEVICE=" lines in SYSTEM.INI
  94.    11. Install provides support for non-English languages - it will look
  95.        for a DLL called WINSTALL.DLL in the directory from which INSTALL.EXE
  96.        is executed. If this DLL is found, Install will load the string tables
  97.        used for messages from it. By the same token, it will look for
  98.        UNINST.DLL in the directory from which UNINSTAL.EXE was executed.
  99.    12. Install provides support for PARTIAL INSTALLATIONS of program. In this
  100.        respect, you can have up to 10 installation options.
  101.    13. Install provides support for displaying a "banner" in the background,
  102.        and for specifying the text of the banner, the font to use used for it,
  103.        the font size, the color of the text, the color of the background, and
  104.        a brush to paint the background.
  105.    14. Install provides support for displaying a bitmap file, stretched to fill the
  106.        screen.
  107.    15. Install will optionally check the disks being inserted by the user to verify
  108.        that they are the correct ones.
  109.    16. Install provides an UNINSTALLER, which can be used to uninstall any
  110.        program that was installed with Chief's Installer Pro.
  111.    17. Chief's Installer Pro will check the target directory for the existence of
  112.        any copy of each file being installed, and will prompt the user for
  113.        over-write permission.
  114.    18. Chief's Installer Pro will check for version information in
  115.        existing copies of shared binary files, and for date stamps in
  116.        non-shared files.
  117.    19. Chief's Installer Pro will use the 3D dialog effects in CTL3DV2.DLL
  118.        if a copy of that file is found. If CTL3DV2.DLL is not found, then
  119.        the program will use standard Windows dialogs (the absence of the file
  120.        will NOT cause an error).
  121.    20. Chief's Installer Pro provides support for restarting Windows if any
  122.        active shared file was overwritten. A dialog asking for confirmation
  123.        appears automatically  if any active shared file was overwritten during
  124.        the installation. The text on this dialog can be changed by the
  125.        $RESTARTWIN-MESSAGE reserved word.
  126.    21. Chief's Installer Pro provides support for displaying a README file to
  127.        the user when the installer is executed. The README file should be a
  128.        plain ASCII file not bigger than 16kb. The file should be called
  129.        WINSTALL.TXT. You can cause the contents of the file to be displayed
  130.        automatically by setting $AUTO-CLICK-BUTTON to 4 (otherwise the user
  131.        will have to click on the "readme" button to display the text. If the
  132.        file WINSTALL.TXT is not found, then the "readme" button will be removed
  133.        at run time.
  134.    22. Chief's Installer Pro provides support for making entries into the the
  135.        Registration Database, by the reserved word $REG-DATA.

  141.     CHIEF'S Installer Pro IS *NOT* FREE SOFTWARE.

  143.     Chief's Installer Pro is released as SHAREWARE. This means that you may
  144.     use it, and/or supply it as the installation routine for any of your
  145.     applications, as long as;

  152.        [2] My name does NOT appear ANYWHERE in your application's

  156.    The REGISTRATION FEE is £20 (U.K. Sterling); or $29 (US); or

  159.     SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTION
  160.     ----------------------
  161.     You may distribute the package freely to FTP sites, Bulletin
  162.     Boards, Shareware/Freeware/Public Domain archives, CD-ROMS, Magazine
  163.     Cover Disks and CD-ROMS, etc. Shareware disk vendors also may also
  164.     freely freely distribute the package.
